Actually, it happens more than you think. In Tokyo there were people wearing t-shirts with nonsense English words and phrases.

The language looks artistic and it makes perfect sense. It's mysterious to us. I say us, you targeted Americans but I have a similar attitude towards it and/or I can empathise with it.

you know what would be awesome if some Asian person was walking around with some random racial slur tattooed on them and had no idea what it meant.

I honestly don't see why this is a problem. It's art. The reasons for each person to get art placed on their body is their own reason, and doesn't have to make sense.

So I guess the OP needs to agree with something for it to be okay for others to do...
People, all over the world and throughout history, use symbols/characters to convey meaning. Chinese and Japanese characters are no different. It'd be a little boring for all Americans (and there are many cultures in America) to only use English words for tattoos. Open your mind a little.

Check out 'Engrish.com' (if it's still up.) Asians go BONKERS for English silk-screened Tees and shit. Also, Miyavi has the words 'un -do' tatooed on his collar bones.
Because it's cruise control for cool.
Personally I see nothing wrong with it if they do their research and can read whats being written on 'em. Hockey-Jock walking into a tatty parlour saying to the guy 'I wans strength in chinese tattooed on the back of my neck!' expecting that to be what he gets, is just dumb. Goes for any tattoo, you pick what you want, exactly what you want, because it'll be on you for a VERY long time.
